Time is running out and the new year is quickly approaching! Don't forget to make time for grocery shopping and plan out your shopping list. Here are some suggestions for incorporating Maryland ingredients into your holiday meals.
Meat
If farm-fresh turkey is your choice for the main course, Maryland has a number of turkey farms to choose from. Thurmont-based Hillside Turkey Farms is a third-generation farm that provides several sets of cooking instructions right on its website.
Battle Creek Beef – located on the historic Taney Place Farm in Southern Maryland – raises grass-fed and pasture-raised animals. The family-owned farm has been operating since the early 1800's and has been passed down through nine generations.
Consider Brandy Stuffed Hams of Gambrills for the easiest delivery in Maryland. These award-winning hams are transported in temperature-controlled trucks and packaged in insulated bags to ensure freshness.
Or, take a hint from the famous Baltimore-born song and go with crabs for Christmas. The Crab Place and Kent Island Crab Cakes are known for their Maryland-style seafood meals shipped right to your front door.
Produce
For local fruits and veggies, be sure to visit one of Maryland's many farmers markets. More than 15 Maryland markets stay open for business during the winter season. To find a farmers market near you, visit MarylandsBest.net or read the Maryland Department of Agriculture's Winter Farmers Market Guide.
And if you're still looking for a last-minute gift, consider gifting a CSA membership to your loved one.
Desserts
If you didn't stock up on fruit at any of Maryland's 100+ orchards this fall, visit a local bakery to satisfy your pie craving. If you're in the mood for creative flavors, Dangerously Delicious Pies in Baltimore creates each of their products from scratch with the freshest ingredients. Try the pork barbeque or steak mushroom pies to have your main course and dessert all-in-one!
If you are low on time, take the easy way out and order a dozen cupcakes from Reisterstown's IcedGems Baking, or Desserts by Rita in Havre de Grace and Ocean City.
Drinks
Add some extra holiday spirit to your family-gathering with help from Maryland wineries, breweries, and distilleries.
Blackwater Distilling was founded in 2008 and is considered Maryland's most awarded distillery. The company's premier product, Sloop Betty Vodka, recently celebrated its 5th anniversary.
Located in Laurel, Jailbreak Brewing Company is an easy drive and central to much of Maryland's population. Stop by and test out some brews before picking up a case for the holidays.
Running Hare Vineyard in Prince Frederick offers a little bit of Tuscany and Napa in Southern Maryland. Try the Chambourcin dessert wine or the Sangiovese for its cranberry and black cherry flavor.
Need some cheese to go with your wine? Try artisanal specialties at Firefly Farms in Garrett County or Caprikorn Farms in Washington County.
