The BioTechnical Institute of Maryland (BTI), which works with unemployed adults to transition them to careers in the life sciences industry, was among 12 non-profit organizations selected nationally to receive a $232,000 grant that will help the organization continue its training program, BioSTART to Lab Associates.

Through the training program, BTI will recruit, select and work with 30 Baltimore City residents between the ages of 18 – 29. The BTI participants are gaining occupational skills training in the life sciences as well as scientific training and certification for placements with organizations in biotechnology, pharma and related industries.

"We are thrilled that MOED recognizes the importance of life sciences high quality skill-based training as a conduit for changing individuals and distressed neighborhoods," said Kathleen Weiss, BTI Executive Director. "Our program has introduced many new people to the life sciences industry who had little to no awareness of this industry. Some of our graduates then continue to degree programs and long, successful technical careers."
