Maryland launches tools to enhance military sites, surrounding areas

01/09/2023 | Amanda Winters

With help from a federal grant, the state of Maryland is releasing new tools to help support sustainability and continued development at the state’s military installations and surrounding communities.

The Maryland Department of Commerce and the Maryland Department of Planning, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), have launched the Military and Community Compatible Use Website  alongside the Renewable Energy Compatible Siting Project . Both of these items are integral parts of the 2019 Maryland Statewide Joint Land Use Study Response Implementation Strategy  to support military-civilian compatible use.

This first-of-its-kind compatible use website will provide resources and information on compatible use planning, fostering collaboration and joint planning between the military, neighboring communities, and government agencies to ensure success of the installations while strengthening economic development in the regions.

The siting project provides renewable energy developers with resources to support the siting of renewable energy projects, so they are compatible with military operations in the state.
