The American Cancer Society has awarded three new grants to support and further cancer research in Maryland.

Each grant is funded for multiple years and together total nearly $2 million in cancer research funding. Since 1946, the society has awarded more than 1,091 grants to researchers in Maryland.

Laura D. Wood, MD, PhD, has received a $792,000 grant to investigate therapeutic approaches for pancreatic cancer at Johns Hopkins University. The study will look at individual patient’s tumors and their genetic features in hopes to find answers and needed cures for future survival.

Corinne Joshu, PhD, has also received a $792,000 grant for a study focused on men living with biochemical recurrent prostate cancer. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health will host a trial that proposes using weight lost as a form of therapy to slow disease progression and growth.

Stuart Martin, PhD, has received a $360,000 grant to fund junior faculty participation at the University of Maryland’s Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. The junior faculty will assist in research related to breast cancer, blood cancers, brain tumors, and colon cancer, among others.

The American Cancer Society currently funds 17 research projects in Maryland worth more than $12 million across the state’s universities and medical institutions, including Johns Hopkins Hospital, University of Maryland, College Park, the National Cancer Institute, and others. Not only does the American Cancer Society fund cancer research throughout the state, the not-for-profit also provides free transportation, lodging, support, and resources for cancer patients, their caregivers, and more. Additionally, approximately $2.39 million was raised last year through the society’s fundraising events throughout Central and Western Maryland to fight cancer.
