In conjunction with Small Business Saturday on November 28th, the Maryland Department of Commerce encourages each Maryland resident to explore their neighborhood and support local businesses all year long. Show us how you shop small on Twitter at #ShopSmall @MDBiz.
In Mountain Maryland, the locally-made productsof Allegany, Garrett and Washington counties range from farm-made food baskets to collector's items. The Appalachian area provides a scenic getaway to residents throughout the year, but don't forget about the perks of small shops when it comes to holiday shopping.
"Our historic downtowns are the hearts of our communities, but it's the small, independent shops and restaurants that make each place unique," said Heather Gramm, Commerce's Director of Regional Growth and Retention. "From the farm-to-table cheeses of Firefly Farms in Accident, to Bickle's Snow Skate and Surf in downtown Hagerstown, the towns of Western Maryland have so much to offer not just during the holidays, but all year long."
Here are our top picks for this Saturday's festivities in Western Maryland.
Allegany County
Frostburg has a little something for everyone on Small Business Saturday. This Historic Main Street had five new businesses open this year and is ready for the holiday season crowds. This weekend, 22 businesses will be offering specials, in-store sales, and discounted gift certificates in honor of the #ShopSmall event.
For the businessman, how about a custom suit from Crestmont LTD? Visitors travel from all over the area to wear these specially-made pieces. For the video game addict, visit Cartridges Galore. This brick-and-mortar business stocks years of gaming history, featuring anything from the original Nintendo Entertainment System to the latest XBOXONE and Sony PlayStation 4 releases.
"In addition to being great for the local economy and supporting businesses, shopping at local stores is a lot more meaningful," said Jessica Palumbo, City of Frostburg Main Street Program Manager. "One thing I like to point out is that each store hand selects its inventory. And when you're giving gifts to loved ones, the selection process is made that much more special."

Garrett County
Serving as the county seat and home to2,000 residents, Oakland has a number of businessesprepared to take on Small Business Saturday. But nothing beats the area's agriculture and craftsmenour favorite items focus on Maryland farms and foods.
Pug Ridge Place has goat milk gift baskets ready for customers. The Painted Cupboard features an entrepreneur's natural handmade soaps and delicious chocolates from Deep Creek Sweets. And, the Ursus Americanus Trading Post offers local barnwood furniture and accents.
"Our local small businesses are an essential part of our town's survival. We are very thankful to have them," said Michelle Ross, Oakland Business Coordinator. "The businesses tend to reinvest their dollars into local kids' sports teams, charities, churches and non-profits organizations. I am amazed every year with how much money our small town raises for people in needthe generosity is amazing."

Washington County
Downtown Hagerstown is encouraging Washington County residents to shop small and win big this weekend. Shoppers who spend more than $20 at a downtown business will receive an entry to win one of five $50 gift certificates! Can't decide which shop to visit first? Step inside the Potomac Bead Company and see what catches your eye, all while celebrating the company's 10th anniversary!
While you're in Hagerstown, stop by the local Premium Outlets for the first annual WashCo Artisan Market – a handmade bazaar featuring local farmers, producers and crafters, all prepared to face the bustling holiday shopping crowd. The market will be open each Saturday and Sunday until December 20th.
"Small Business Saturday gives our community the opportunity to recognize how much locally-owned, small businesses contribute to our economy and provide jobs for our residents," said Jill Frick, Director of Community and Economic Development for the City of Hagerstown. "By shopping small, you can find unique items and say thank you at the same time."
