The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved Maryland’s petition for new HUBZone areas throughout the state.

The new designations – located in Allegany County, Somerset County, and Worcester County – will bring significant economic development opportunities to some of the state’s most rural communities.

The effort, led by the Maryland Department of General Services and supported by the Maryland Department of Commerce, will create opportunities for certified small businesses in economically challenged areas. By being located in a HUBZone, small businesses have the chance to compete for federal contracts and receive preferential procurement consideration.

“This approval will give rural small businesses the chance to access federal government contracts, leading to new jobs and new investment in the areas that need it most,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Kevin Anderson. “We are very grateful to the U.S. Small Business Administration for its constant support of our state’s small business efforts.”
