Artificial Intelligence

Tech Powerhouse

The global leader in cybersecurity talent, and home to a burgeoning medical technology sector, it’s no surprise that Maryland is also a hub for AI innovation in the U.S. In fact, the Baltimore/Washington D.C. metro is among the top 10 regions in the nation for employing AI professionals, according to Forbes. As AI advances, Maryland is poised to support it – offering the tech and the talent for companies to hit the ground running with AI ambitions.

Major AI Initiatives from Academic Institutions

With top-rated engineering programs and focused majors for robotics and machine learning, Maryland universities are preparing students for whatever comes next in tech. And as we enter new horizons with AI, Maryland universities are leading the charge in AI research and development.

The University of Maryland is all-in on understanding and harnessing the power of AI, as seen through several initiatives, including: the Industrial AI Center , the Values-Centered AI initiative , a Tech Incubator focused on AI , the Center for Governance of Technology and Systems , and a $68 million agreement with the Army Research Lab  to accelerate AI and autonomy.

The University of Baltimore offers a first-of-its-kind Master's in Artificial Intelligence for Business , which bridges the gap between data and action.

Morgan State, through its Center for Equitable Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Systems , has many initiatives focused on ensuring inclusivity in AI. The University also offers AI Machine Learning Bootcamp , a comprehensive training course.

As Fortune put it, Johns Hopkins University "is putting out the welcome mat"  with a major investment in a new institute in data science and translation. The Data Science and AI Institute  focuses on research and education in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence across diverse fields.

An early entrant into the world of AI , UMBC has than 35 faculty researchers working in AI, machine learning, and data science. UMBC offers courses in AI through its UMBC Training Centers  and is home to labs like the UMBC CLSI-SOC Group , a leader in brain-inspired computing, neural network architecture, and their applications. It’s no wonder UMBC has received external research awards for AI-related topics from top institutions including NSF, DARPA, DoD, and NIST.

The University of Maryland is a big research institution. With engineering, AI, robotics, and computer science, the talent flow that comes out of the University of Maryland is crucial to our growth and success.
