The history of one of the nation’s oldest coffee brands began in 1859, when an iconic name in grocery, A&P (Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company), opened its first store in New York with whole-bean coffee being one of its signature products. In the early 1900s, the Eight O’Clock coffee brand name was created by A&P following a survey which found 8:00am and 8:00pm were the most popular times to drink coffee in the U.S.

Today, the beloved Eight O’Clock brand spans across multiple generations, with a mission to bring the joy of great tasting, authentic and high-quality coffee to every American (and Maryland!) home. The premium coffee brand is now owned by the international consumer goods company, Tata Consumer Products, and has been successfully roasting its beans in Maryland for decades.

The state’s location is central to a large number of retail customers and coffee drinkers, with access to one-third of the nation’s population within an overnight drive. Proximity to the Port of Baltimore gives the company access to importing high quality arabica coffee beans with ease. Most importantly, the company’s production facility in Landover, in Prince George’s County, is home to Eight O’Clock Coffee’s passionate team of approximately 100 people who give their all to produce some of the best coffee available.

“The Eight O’Clock coffee brand believes that every coffee drinker deserves a great cup of coffee. The brand has been a leader in coffee for over one hundred years and today we rely on all of that coffee expertise to make high quality coffee affordable for everyone,” said Conor O’Brien, senior vice president of Tata Consumer Products US, Inc. “With long heritage roots in Maryland, we are committed to delivering the highest quality tasting coffee and new flavors to appeal to all tastes at all times of the day!”

Over the years, there have been some pretty obvious shifts in the way people brew and drink their coffee at home, with flavor and convenience being at the top of every coffee drinkers list. Tata Consumer Products and its Eight O’Clock Coffee have found a way to stay on “ground” by creating new gourmet flavors and formats to join the already great tastes of its traditional coffee brews. The company typically releases a new flavor every couple years to keep up with current tastes, and has partnered with businesses like Keurig to release a brew-at-home, single cup format for an Eight O’Clock Coffee brew any time.

Eight O’Clock Coffee can be found online and in grocery stores or mass merchants throughout Maryland—brew yourself a cup of Maryland history!
