The 2015 Inc. magazine 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in the country includes 106 firms in Maryland. And five Maryland companies made the top 500 list.
The companies on the list were ranked according to percentage revenue growth over the last three years. All have revenue of at least $2 million. The Maryland companies employed a total of 44,139 people and averaged $23.1M in revenues and three-year revenue growth of 277 percent.
Greensmith, a Derwood company founded in 2008, was the top Maryland name on the list. Greensmith offers large-scale energy solutions, including a software platform to maximize the performance of major energy storage systems, to customers across the country.

Maryland private companies in Government Services make up the bulk of the growth (27 companies) followed by IT services (23), Business Products and Services (11), Advertising and Marketing (7) and Software (6). Forty-five companies appear on the 2015 list for the first time, while A2z a Columbia software company (ranked 4860) has made the list every year since 2006.
Maryland's 106 Inc.5000 companies rank 17th in the nation. California far outpaced other states with 681 companies with Texas, New York and Florida following.
The Washington Metropolitan area, which includes Maryland's Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Montgomery and Prince George's counties ranked 2nd in the nation with 279 companies. The Baltimore Metropolitan area ranked 23rd with 45 companies.
Montgomery County led among Maryland counties with 39 companies, followed by Howard County with 17, Prince George's with 13, and Baltimore County with 13. Anne Arundel had 9 companies on the list, Baltimore City 8 and Carroll County 2. Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's, Frederick and Queen Anne's each had one county on the list.
