After landing a $2.2 billion contract in March 2021 with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Hitachi Rail USA will embark on a major expansion in Maryland to produce hundreds of new railcars for the Metro.
The global provider of rail solutions has purchased land off of Greencastle Pike in Hagerstown, Washington County where it plans to build a $70 million, 300,000 square-foot facility. It is expected to employ up to 460 full-time workers and help sustain 1,300 jobs in the region. Roughly 60 percent of the construction value of this project will be spent in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia with local suppliers and small businesses.
“Hitachi is an incredible global company, and their decision to select Hagerstown as the site of a major U.S. expansion is tremendous news for Washington County and the entire state of Maryland,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “With this new facility, Hitachi will create hundreds of critical manufacturing jobs in our state with the capability to serve the wider North American market. We are excited to work together on this transformative project and look forward to the company’s continued success in Maryland.”
