From playgrounds and dog parks, to fitness equipment and bleachers, Cunningham Recreation  has more than 50 years of experience in creating outdoor recreational sites across the country.

A playground equipment supplier with a location on the Eastern Shore, Cunningham Recreation expanded to Maryland in 2014 after acquiring the Queenstown office from its former tenant, West Recreation, where it employs three sales associates and one senior designer.

With locations throughout the East Coast and Midwest, the third-generation company currently serves as the representative agency for GameTime – a leading playground designer and manufacturer nationwide – in 16 states and Washington, D.C.

What makes the company unique is its speciality in inclusive playground designs, providing custom outdoor entertainment spaces and enrichment for all ages in need of recreation. With a wide variety of designs, Cunningham Recreation provides everything from spinning seats and outdoor musical instruments, to adaptive swing seats and sensory play panels for all children and personalities.

“Some clients come to us with a specific vision with all the details, while others come with a rough sketch on a napkin, or just the idea that they want a playground but they are not sure where to start,” said Michele Breakfield, director of marketing. “We work with our clients on every detail from design through construction. We bring their playground vision to life keeping in mind their project goals, space, and budget.”

Working with numerous parks and recreation departments, childcare centers, churches, and more, has helped Cunningham Recreation compile a significant portfolio. In Maryland alone, the company features two dozen projects  on its website that contribute to our state’s quality of life.

The Henry Parker Athletic Complex  in Salisbury, for example, features both a Little League Challenger Field and an inclusive playground design. A fully-ramped accessible design with a large play structure provides the site with completely accessible amenities for the entire Wicomico County community. And together with East Coast Recreation Services , the company’s Bishopville-based installer, Cunningham Recreation is beginning a brand new playground installation for 5 to 12-year-olds at a school also located in Wicomico County.

The most recent Maryland-based project for the company was the completion of Othello Park in Frederick, including a playground, bleachers, site furnishings, shelter, safety surfacing, and fencing. One of Cunningham Recreation’s local sales associates lives near the space and is a frequent visitor with his family.

“He was very dedicated to making this project a success and one we could be proud of,” said Michele.
