The Appalachian Trail has long been the focal point for campers, hikers and sightseers alike. Hundreds of towns, counties, and communities dot along the Appalachian Trail corridor and have become a neighborly asset to visitors along the 2,100 mile trail. Here in Maryland, we are lucky to have our own communities that have opened their hearts to millions of visitors each year.

Tucked away in Frederick and Washington Counties sit two communities along the trail that welcome visitors who hike the “AT.” The City of Brunswick and Town of Boonsboro have provided outstanding support to the Appalachian Trail throughout history, and in early June received some well-deserved official recognition as Appalachian Trail Communities.

Designation as an Appalachian Trail Community  is decided by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The program acts as a catalyst for enhancing development and community engagement, while aiding local municipalities with conservation planning, as well as promoting the trail and all its resources. The program also highlights the communities taking steps to ensure the ongoing protection of their natural, cultural, and recreational resources.

With millions visiting the trail each year, outdoor recreation outfitters, shops, restaurants, and businesses call the Appalachian Trail corridor their home. Through their thoughtful planning of programs to engage volunteers on the Appalachian Trail, the City of Brunswick and Town of Boonsboro have made their communities welcoming places for visitors while supporting local businesses, and conserving the trail’s unique landscapes.
