A new collaboration featuring women in Maryland’s brewing industry has launched just in time for FeBREWary, the month-long celebration of craft beer across the state.
Suffragette Stout, a limited edition release created by 10 local breweries, highlights 2020 as the Year of the Woman in Maryland—a designation by Governor Larry Hogan as the state celebrates the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote.
According to the Brewers Association of Maryland, the women-brewed collaborative stout is available on tap at Silver Spring’s Denizens Brewing Co. and includes chocolate, lactose, cherries, and local malt.
In addition to Denizens, the breweries featured in the partnership include Astro Lab Brewing (Silver Spring), B.C. Brewery (Hunt Valley), Brawling Bear (Gaithersburg), Calvert Brewing Company (Upper Marlboro), Checkerspot Brewing Company (Baltimore), Manor Hill Brewing (Ellicott City), Milkhouse Brewery (Mt. Airy), Mully’s Brewery (Prince Frederick), and Ten Eyck Brewing Company (Queenstown).
"At Denizens Brewing Co. we are always proud to support causes that bring forth opportunity and equality for women,” said Julie Verratti. “The creation of Suffragette Stout has helped build further comradery amongst Maryland breweries and the women who play an important role in their success.”
In conjunction with the release of Suffragette Stout, the Brewers Association also unveiled the Women in Beer trail, featuring 18 different brewery locations throughout Maryland. The online trail, featuring local breweries with women in strong leadership roles, can be found here.
“It’s exciting to see the impact these women are having on Maryland’s thriving craft beverage industry,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly M. Schulz. “These ladies are playing an important role in growing the state’s agribusiness sector, while providing sought-after destinations for residents and visitors alike. We’re proud to have them in Maryland.”
