A powerful collaboration between St. John Properties and the University of Maryland BioPark is helping shape a new era of biomedical discovery in Baltimore. Together, they are supporting the Edward and Jennifer St. John Center for Translational Engineering and Medicine (CTEM), a cutting-edge facility inside the BioPark’s 4MLK building where clinicians, researchers and engineers work side by side to turn real medical challenges into breakthrough technologies.
A key part of this groundbreaking collaboration is a new academic pathway that allows engineering students to continue on and earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) medical degree. As healthcare needs grow and the demand for medical doctors increases, this pathway helps expand the pool of future MDs with strong engineering foundations and students who bridge engineering and medicine. An engineering background equips future physicians with analytical design skills, systems thinking, and a deeper understanding of the technologies that drive modern care, helping them diagnose, design and deliver solutions more effectively. It is a forward-looking model that strengthens Maryland’s innovation ecosystem, deepening the talent pipeline for life changing research and expanding opportunities for students across the state.
This effort is the fifth collaboration of its kind in the nation. Partnerships like this exemplify Maryland’s strength as a life sciences leader, where world-class research institutions, forward-thinking private partners and a highly-skilled workforce come together to accelerate innovation and improve lives.
St. John Properties recently highlighted the philanthropic vision behind this work in a profile featuring Sharon Akers, president of the Edward St. John Foundation, who touts the tech-forward future of medicine.
