Now in its fifth year, the BGE Energizing Small Business Grant program is once again offering $20,000 grants to eligible Maryland small businesses. The program is designed to support and empower small businesses in Maryland, helping them to grow, innovate, and make a positive impact in local communities. Applications are being accepted through June 13, 2025.
Since the program’s inception in 2021, BGE has awarded $14.86 million to 741 local businesses in various industries to help strengthen the state’s economic backbone. This year, the company is investing another $1.8 million, funded by shareholders, to continue fueling that momentum. The program has supported businesses operated by historically underrepresented minority groups, which often face challenges in accessing capital. With over 65 percent of grants provided to businesses owned by people of color and over 68 percent owned by women, these grants are designed to foster growth and empower businesses to succeed.
Lynette and Eric Dodson, Owners of Cuples Tea House, received the BGE grant in 2022. Until receiving the grant, a utilities provider wasn’t on their radar as a funding source for their business.
“They’re the electric company. I hadn’t thought of BGE in any other way,” Lynette said. “As I’ve gotten to know them more, I realize that community is important to BGE. They have really stepped up in that regard. It’s wonderful that BGE can be that catalyst for folks. I’d encourage anyone to apply.”
Applicants must be a for-profit business and an existing BGE electric and/or gas customer in good standing with BGE. Other eligibility criteria include:
- Operating for at least one year at the start of the application
- In good standing (or on the way to) with the State of Maryland through the state’s Department of Assessments & Taxation
- A maximum of 25 full-time employees
- Annual gross revenues in 2024 of less than $7 million USD
- Demonstrated need for funding to support business and serve customers
