The winter blues aren’t affecting Maryland’s tourism sector, with numerous high-scale projects being announced in the state.
In Frederick, construction is underway for the new Marriott full-service hotel and conference center at Carroll Creek. The recent groundbreaking showed off the future flagship property that will feature more than 200 guest rooms, 2,700 square-feet of retail, and 20,000 square-feet of event space inside and outside of the facility.
Estimates calculate that the project will generate $1.5 billion in new private sector spending over the next 25 years and generate more than $4 million in state and local tax revenue annually, while supporting 200 direct, indirect, and induced jobs in the region. The project is expected to be completed sometime in 2027.
“This hotel and conference center reflects our long-term vision for a vibrant, connected downtown and a stronger local economy. It will create jobs, attract new visitors, and open doors for local businesses while generating lasting opportunities for our residents,” said Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor. “This project represents what’s possible when a city believes in its potential, and we’re proud to take this important step forward for Frederick.”
Cruise Maryland is gaining a second Carnival cruise ship to its docket: Carnival Pride will share the city with Carnival Miracle starting in 2027. According to a recent announcement, this is the first time Carnival will homeport two ships from Baltimore, showcasing the company’s continued commitment to the region. Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas is also expected to return to Baltimore in 2027, giving Mid Atlantic passengers a variety of options for their sailing needs out of the region’s busiest cruise port.
American professional soccer club D.C. United appears to be moving forward with plans to build a new soccer stadium in Baltimore. The site – which currently houses the Carroll Park Golf Course – would be the city’s first soccer-specific stadium that could hold up to 12,000 people. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and NBA star Carmelo Anthony have announced their support for the project, which would also hold a youth academy and potential housing for tournaments.
While the financing has not been determined, Anthony has been announced as an investor and active partner. Located two miles from Oriole Park at Camden Yards and Ravens Stadium, the stadium would be home to both a professional women’s soccer team and a men’s minor league team.
“We think [Baltimore] is a robust soccer market commercially and also talent wise, athletically,” said D.C. United Co-owner Jason Levien. “Baltimore is a different and distinct market from D.C., and it’s a robust one and one we’re really bullish on.”
These announcements follow the state’s new exciting partnership with the creators of the Las Vegas Sphere, as they plan to bring the second U.S. entertainment destination to Maryland. The latest study shows that the venue could generate a $1.3 billion economic impact in Prince George’s County.
