The State of Maryland and the Province of Ontario have renewed a formal agreement to support economic development cooperation between the two regions.

Originally signed in 2020, this updated Memorandum of Understanding includes a collaborative focus on life sciences, information technology, and clean energy. The MOU will also enhance the bilateral partnership by encouraging research sharing across several industries and hosting academic institutional exchange programs.

“From meeting the needs of a digital economy to addressing climate change, Maryland and Ontario are working towards several of the same transformational economic development initiatives,” said Maryland Department of Commerce Secretary Harry Coker, Jr. “Encouraging these open lines of communication will strengthen ties between both regions as we support our growing North American communities.”

The memorandum was signed during a three-day mission to Canada led by Secretary Coker. The international visit included several meetings on quantum computing, including a stop at IonQ’s Canadian headquarters in Toronto.

Each year, Maryland exports $2.2 billion in goods to Canada, with trade between the nations supporting 153,100 employees in Maryland.
