Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Maryland's tax-free week is back.

Beginning Sunday, August 9, Marylanders are encouraged to visit local stores and take part in the annual shopping event. Qualifying articles of clothing or footwear, costing $100 or less, are available for purchasewithout paying the State's six percent sales tax.

"Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week is a great opportunity to get deals on back-to-school clothes or to refresh a tired wardrobe," Comptroller Peter Franchot said. "During these tough economic times, having a break from the 6 percent sales tax on shoes and clothing can make a real difference for families, enabling them to save more of their hard-earned money."

And for retailers, back-to-school shopping is known as the second largest shopping season. With school sales and tax-free shopping combined, retailers are hoping for a large turnout. "You can count on Maryland retailers to do their part with great sales and promotions," said Maryland Retailers Association spokesperson Tom Saquella.

The Comptroller is currently traveling throughout Maryland to promote the State's tax-free event. Follow along on Twitter @MDComptroller.
