Maryland’s nearly three dozen public-use airports generated $1.4 billion in economic activity last year, according to a recent report from the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA).

The 33 airports examined in the report stretch from the Garrett County Airport in Western Maryland to the Ocean City Municipal Airport in Worcester County, and from the Claremont Airport in Cecil County to the Maryland Airport in Charles County. The study did not include BWI Airport, which compiles its own statewide economic impact report.

An estimated 321,360 visitors traveled through these public-use airports, generating nearly $27 million in state and local taxes. The facilities support more than 10,000 jobs and nearly $753 million in payroll, including directly employed workers, indirect jobs supported by local purchases, and induced jobs that support local economic sectors.

“MAA's study highlights the significant contributions Maryland’s airports make to job creation, local business development, and enhanced connectivity that foster innovation and competitiveness,” said Executive Director Ricky Smith. “As we navigate the complexities of the global economy, it is crucial to recognize the strategic importance of our aviation network. Together, we will build on our strengths, foster innovation, and propel Maryland forward towards a prosperous future.”

In total, these 33 airports helped generate more than $1.107 billion in business revenue, which consists of businesses providing goods and services to commercial airlines, among other factors. At the Easton Airport specifically, business revenue has nearly doubled in the past five years—while the local airport generated $48.5 million in 2018, it contributed close to $91.5 million last year.

With so many transportation options to choose from, it’s safe to say Maryland helps businesses and residents stay connected to it all.
