The Baltimore Orioles have clinched the American League East title and the team’s first 100 win season since 1980, but the bigger win for Maryland might have happened off the field as the O’s and the Maryland Stadium Authority announced an agreement to keep the team in Baltimore for at least the next thirty years. Governor Wes Moore was on hand at the Yard to see the Orioles solidify their historic season and to share the announcement that the Birds won’t be leaving the nest.
“I could not be more thrilled to spend decades watching the Orioles win titles in Baltimore,” said Gov. Moore in a statement. “This deal is not only a good use of state resources, but will also drive economic growth in downtown and across the city. Today, we take a big step toward a more vibrant and thriving Baltimore–with good-paying jobs, a diversified economy, and opportunity for all. This deal is good for the city and the state, and I’m grateful for the partnership that got us to this day. The Baltimore renaissance is here.”
While Camden Yards is already considered by many to be the most beautiful park in baseball, the new MOU agreed upon by the team, the Maryland Stadium Authority, and Gov. Moore will solidify plans for a major stadium overhaul that will keep this Maryland treasure at the front of the pack of big league stadiums. The agreement comes on the heels of the Baltimore Ravens agreeing to a 15 year lease to remain at M&T Bank Stadium ensuring pro sports in Baltimore for a generation. The two stadiums are the anchors of Baltimore’s world-class entertainment corridor that stretches from Top Golf and the Horseshoe Casino south of the stadium complexes, to the Baltimore Convention Center, Hippodrome Theatre, and the newly renovated CFG Bank Arena. Baltimore is one of only 22 American cities with both an NFL and MLB franchise.
With nearly two million fans spinning the turnstiles at Camden Yards this year, it’s safe to say Birdland is awash in the glow of Orioles Magic, and the excitement in Maryland is palpable. Read more about the agreement, wear your orange, and tune in to Orioles baseball as Baltimore’s birds make their run to bring the World Series back to Maryland.
