The future is bright for Maryland's solar industry.
Astrum Solar, a leading residential solar power provider and part of the Direct Energy family of brands, is expanding its headquarters and tripling its footprint in Howard County.
With help from a $500,000 loan from the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development(DBED), and a $50,000 reimbursable workforce training grant from the Howard County Economic Development Authority(HCEDA), the company plans to add 240 new jobs over the next three years.
The announcement was made at a new hire orientation this morning by Astrum Solar Vice President Cory Byzewski, who was joined by DBED Deputy Secretary Ben Wu, Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman, and HCEDA CEO Larry Twele.
"Astrum Solar was born and raised in Maryland and since the beginning we have been committed to helping the state by creating jobs and helping Maryland residents benefit from the environmental and financial benefits of solar power," said Cory Byzewski. "Our partnership with DBED will allow us to serve even more Maryland residents and enhance our contribution to Maryland's economy."
"Astrum Solar is one of the fastest-growing companies in the country and we are thrilled they are expanding and adding jobs in Maryland," said DBED Secretary Mike Gill. "We look forward to continuing to work closely with the company as they grow and create excellent job opportunities for Marylanders."
According to The Solar Foundation's survey published last month, Maryland's solar industry employed nearly 3,000 workers in 2014. Industry employers expect that total to grow more than 25% this year. When Astrum Solar's expansion in complete, the company will employ 315 workers in the State.
"The expansion of Astrum Solar is a perfect example of the type of economic development we strive for in Howard County," said County Executive Kittleman. "This dynamic company offers sought-after employment opportunities and a desirable product. Its location in southeastern Howard County aligns with our priority of attracting innovative, successful businesses to the area."
"Diversifying our jobs base is a priority at the Howard County Economic Development Authority and this expansion by Astrum Solar is a great example of the opportunities the energy sector holds," said HCEDA's Twele. "By working closely with our partners at the state level we can help grow businesses that are environmentally friendly and generate well-paying jobs."
