The final phase of construction is wrapping up at the Maryland Technology Center, a prominent feature in the revitalization of Indian Head.

Formerly a shopping center, the revamped 30,000 square-foot facility has nearly 5,000 square-feet of training space as well as lab space for research, development testing and evaluation, to help spur economic development throughout the region. It also houses the United States Bomb Technician Association (USBTA) headquarters among other local businesses and base contractors.

According to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, the space has already attracted nine new industry partners and dozens of jobs to Charles County. Leading space technology company X-Bow Systems, which initially operated out of the technology center, recently expanded to a larger space in Indian Head where it expects to create additional new jobs for the region.

“The Maryland Technology Center, situated in the Western Charles County Technology Corridor, is quickly becoming a cornerstone in driving innovation and attracting industry leaders to Charles County,” said Economic Development Director Kelly Robertson-Slagle. “The county offers the right mix for growth—proximity to federal assets, a skilled workforce, and competitive business costs—making our community a prime location for defense, federal contracting, technology, and energetics sectors.”

To help support the renovation, the center has received financial support from the Maryland Department of Commerce, the Maryland Department of Housing, and Charles County Economic Development. The ribbon cutting for the facility is expected to take place this spring.

“The Maryland Technology Center is a force for economic rejuvenation, bringing technology development, workforce training and cutting-edge research to Indian Head and all of Southern Maryland,” said Maryland Housing Secretary Jake Day. “This project is a leading example of what can be borne out of strong collaboration between the state, local government, and nonprofit partners.”

“Since its early planning stages, the Maryland Technology Center has been an invaluable partner to the community,” said Robertson-Slagle. “We are excited to see this partnership grow and strengthen the intersection of Charles County’s key industries, creating new opportunities for both businesses and residents across the county.”
