October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to pay tribute to those affected by the disease, many Marylanders will be racing to Hunt Valley for this weekend's Race for the Cure.

Founded in 1983, Race for the Cure is world's largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer awareness. Managed by Susan G. Komen, the global event now has more than 150 races worldwide on four different continents.

Here in Maryland, the first local race took place in 1993 and gathered 3,000 participants to help raise money and spread awareness. Now in its 23rd year, Baltimore County-based walk and run is expected to bring in more than 15,000 participants, with a goal of $2 million in donations. And with the race just around the corner, organizers are gearing up for the new changes and activities scheduled for Sunday.

New for this year, various food trucks will be on the property during the race, including Madame BBQ,La Cakerie, and more. Hosted by the Maryland Mobile Food Vending Association, a portion of all sales will be donated to the fundraiser.

In addition, a survivor dance party has been added to the agenda after the race wraps up. Kim Marzullo, race and development manager for Komen Maryland, tells us that one of the main goals for Race for the Cure is making sure every breast cancer survivor is honored in a special way.

Survivors can be spotted throughout the race in pink t-shirts and hats and will have their names announced at the finish line. A survivor parade, a group photo, and a special VIP-type tent are just a few of the activities dedicated to the courageous cancer-fighting participants.

"The race is an emotional and joyous day. We hope that the survivors see the immense crowd and see all of their supporters," said Marzullo. "It's heartwarming and a really great experience."
